What a Kraft Soap Box Does With Ink That Coated Stock Doesn't
Unlike any coated paperboard, ink will act differently on kraft, which means that it's important to understand how ink will behave in order to have the printed design appear as it is envisioned in the design file. Unlike SBS, where the ink sits on the surface without being absorbed, a kraft soap box will absorb ink, dulling the colors and decreasing their saturation from the same file printed on white board. Bright colors are especially affected. A bright red on SBS is a brick red on brown kraft and a bright yellow can be an almost olive color.
Typically we suggest single-color or two-color prints for kraft paper, with a smaller color gamut – in the darker end of the spectrum where the amount of ink absorbed is not so significant. Even if the file is well designed, it can appear muddy or washed-out when printed in full CMYK on kraft paper. Foil stamping, however, does something interesting when applied to kraft; things it doesn't do when applied to gloss. A contrast between gold or copper foil and the matte natural kraft surface is considered over loud, which is the reason why a lot of high-end artisan brands are going for this option.
Custom Kraft Soap Boxes and the Sustainability Story That Actually Holds Up
Kraft carries a sustainability story that most brands lean on for messaging, and that story deserves a bit of unpacking since not every kraft box is created equal on the environmental side. Custom soap boxes vary quite a bit depending on how the paperboard was actually sourced and processed. Here's what to look for on the sourcing side:
- FSC certification which ensures that the fibre is sourced from responsibly managed forests and not from unknown sources,
- The percentage of recycled content, from 0% to 100%, which indicates the amount of post-consumer recycled kraft. The percentage of recycled content, which can be 0% (virgin fiber) up to 100% (fully post-consumer recycled kraft).
- To use chlorine free bleaching which only applies to white or lighter color kraft where natural color has been removed. To use chlorine free bleaching which only applies to white or lighter color kraft where the natural color has been removed.
Kraft Boxes for Soap Come With a Color Variation Nobody Warns You About
Most of the time, when you see color variations from batch to batch from your kraft most brands will be surprised and be taken aback by this. The paper used is subject to variability from one paper mill run to the next based on the type of wood pulp and how the paper was processed, which means that Kraft boxes for soap, which are reordered six months after the original run, may return a different, but still distinct shade of brown.
It's not a printing issue – it's a raw material attribute. We have an approach for brands that are concerned about long term color consistency, and that would be either to order sufficient amounts of kraft stock, to get enough supplies to run more than one production from the same paper batch, or to accept that the reorder is going to differ slightly from the original, and that this is part of the natural material story.
Some brands even embrace the difference and produce each run as a limited edition of sorts. Others like white kraft or lightly coated kraft for this reason because white kraft is significantly different from batch to batch compared to brown kraft.
Kraft Soap Boxes Wholesale Trade-Offs Between Cost and Consistency
Kraft tends to run cheaper per unit than comparable SBS stock at wholesale volumes, which is one of the practical reasons brands lean toward kraft for larger orders beyond the aesthetic appeal alone. Kraft soap boxes wholesale pricing on our end reflects that material cost advantage, though a few sourcing considerations affect how much of that saving actually reaches the final invoice:
- Single-supplier sourcing across a wholesale run keeps caliper and color consistent, though it can extend lead time if that supplier is running behind
- Blended sourcing from multiple mills speeds delivery but introduces the batch variation issue mentioned earlier
- Coated versus uncoated kraft affects both cost and durability, with C1S kraft costing more but resisting moisture better
- Print method choice at wholesale volumes shifts too, with offset lithography making more sense at bigger runs and digital reserved for smaller reorder batches
Working out these trade-offs before locking in a wholesale order is usually where the meaningful cost decisions actually get made. The per-box price posted upfront is only part of what a brand ends up paying across the full production cycle.
What Kraft Doesn't Do, and Why That's Often the Point at the Packaging Tree
Kraft doesn't give you the sharp full-color print that a coated white board gives. It doesn't guarantee identical color across every reorder. It doesn't offer the smooth polished surface that reads as luxury in some categories. At the Packaging Tree, none of these is viewed as a restriction, they were all the reasons a brand selected kraft in the first place.
These qualities combine to make an honest-to-goodness natural fiber soap with muted hues, that's what handmade and artisan soap brands are typically aspiring to. Once you've sent the Packaging Tree what you're designing, you've started the conversation about the design of the box because it's what kraft is, and not what it looks like in a printed mockup.
